100 Greatest R&B Songs of the Decade (2000-2009)

Compiling a comprehensive list of the 100 Greatest R&B Songs of the Decade was no easy task and it’s pretty much impossible to put together the  list in rank-ordered form.  I did the best that I could, and while I know that there will be some disagreements, I hope that you all will appreciate the effort and time that was put into forming the list.  The only criteria for this list was that all songs must have been released between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2009.  In order to ensure the accuracy of the list, I used Billboard, Amazon.com, RollingStone.com and allmusic.com to verify the release dates of the songs.

I look forward to reading your comments!

  1. you have some good songs up def love your top five …………..but i think ashanti should have been up there a lil more early on your list just a couple of her songs.plus u have no r.kelly accept one lol but over-all very good …

  2. I will say that there are good songs in the list. There is one thing I should point out. You have Pop mixed in it, ie Michael Jackson, let alone others who just were not R&B. For what it is, its a good list.

  3. I take it that this top 100 R&B list is not based off of sales or airplay but by personal taste. I do agree with most songs on here but i think there is way too much Alicia Keys songs (I counted 8) when other R&B songs or artists were not listed. Not saying that she’s not a great singer but maybe there should be more diversity on this list (c’mon….Mariah Carey, John Legend, Robin Thicke, Chris Brown all with just 1 song and no songs by Dwele, Donell Jones, Janet Jackson, Craig David or Joe). I do give you big time credit for including Neo-Soul artists such as Maxwell, Musiq Soulchild, Anthony Hamilton, Glenn Lewis, Jill Scott, India.Arie and others since this is when Neo-Soul really flourished. Hard list to compile but great job!!

Some songs that would’ve been nice to see here…

    Koffee Brown – After Party
Donell Jones – You Know That I Love You
    Dwele – I Think I Love U, I’m Cheatin’
Kevin Michael – Ain’t Got You
John Legend – Save Room, Green Light
    Gnarls Barkley – Crazy
Chris Brown – Yo (Excuse Me Miss)
Joe – If I Was Your Man
Robin Thicke – The Sweetest Love, Can U Believe
Avant – Don’t Take Your Love Away
Craig David – 7 Days, Fill Me In
Musiq Soulchild – Sunny (Just Friends), Dontchange

  4. Great list.Only on thing i want to point out is the rap and R@B collabs were left out.Songs like I need a girl by p diddy ft usher,i’m real by ja rule and j lo.satisfy you by p diddy ft r kelly.they would have been a great addition.

  5. Thank you very much for this reference. I’ll offer some I love from the 2000s unlisted. Lyfe Jennings’ “Never Never Land”, Michael Jackson’s “Butterflies” and Jaheim’s “Anything”. Kem also made nice songs during the decade. Thank You Again!

  6. thanks for this list. I missed all this music during the decade because I had no interest in it. now I love it and am doing a dj night where this stuff is all I want to play cos it’s what I love dancing to! so I am trying to get more educated… I will check out lots of these songs! thanks.

  7. Why is Mariah Carey only on here once? Surely Don’t Forget About Us and probably Touch My Body deserves a spot here.
I would not say Crazy in Love deserves a spot on this list.
Joe, Avant, or Donnell Jones should’ve been at the top of the list, let alone on the list.
This list is a little too much pop/hip-hop pop: Umbrella, Crazy I.L., Yeah, Blame It, and Rehab just to name a few
